While most people tend to rush to the mechanic’s garage when something minor goes wrong with their car, you can really save a lot of money when you fix it yourself. Now, keep in mind, not everything is worth the time and money to do it yourself. There are certain things that could need fixed that you should certainly let a professional mechanic work on. However, minor problems can often be done for little to nothing when you learn to do it yourself.

Some of the most common things you can do yourself involve your break system, hoses, or belts in your engine. Fixing headlights, taillights, and tires are also things you can easily learn to do. If you have no experience, consider getting online to see how you can fix what is wrong. You can also purchase a fix book for your model of car to get an even more detailed description on how to fix certain problems that may occur with normal wear and tear. The thing you want to be sure of is that you have the proper tools needed to fix the problem. Some automotive problems require special professional tools that only a mechanic would possess. But, if you do have the tools and the time and willingness to learn, be sure to try to save a few bucks and fix it yourself.

Why You Should Not Buy a Used Motorcycle Helmet
By Mike Webb

Buying a used motorcycle helmet would be like buying an air bag for your car from a junkyard, when the rubber hits the road it may or may not save you in a tight situation. Your life is dependent on this piece of equipment so you don t want to be cheap where it counts the most - your head!

Since you don t know how the previous owner handled the helmet you are taking a risk on whether it will provide proper safety for you. Even if the previous owner didn t have a wreck with it on, they may have dropped it hard enough at one time to create a stress crack in the helmet.

There is also a slight health issue here since you are wearing someone else s helmet you will be receiving their sweat and hair that has been embedded in the helmet - not too easy to get them to come completely clean.

And finally you may not get the proper fitting helmet if you go with a used one since you are probably trying to save money you may pick one that is too loose or too tight. Either way it won t be comfortable and again unsafe to use.

The enjoyment of riding a motorcycle is that cool sense of freedom to be on the open road, to escape from the rat race of life and sometimes just to feel like a cowboy riding off into the sunset. Having a motorcycle seems to bring out that hidden rebel within you, but don t be a rebel when it comes to your safety.

So use your head and make the right choice - stay away from used motorcycle helmets as if your life depended on it!

Making sure that your car stays at its optimal level of operation is about having regular maintenance performed on your vehicle. However, there are so many parts that need periodic checkups that it may be difficult to know what to check or change and when. It is helpful, however, simply to look at the various systems that make a car run.

You re probably pretty familiar with the things you need to do to keep the engine running smoothly, like changing the oil every 3,000 miles or three months. In addition, you should change the oil filter, air filter and fuel filter regularly. Keep an eye on your spark plugs and accompanying wires, as well as the PCV valve.

Most things simply need to be checked regularly because they shouldn t be breaking down, at least not unless your car is very old. Systems like the transmission and the emission system need a yearly checkup.

Your brake system, however, may need more regular attention. If anything strange appears to be happening with your brakes (you should be able to tell if they don t “feel” right), then you should have them checked by a professional. For instance, there could be air in the hydraulic system or an imbalance.

The brake pads will also need changing from time to time. You can tell if your brakes begin squealing or grinding, creating metal-on-metal sounds. This system should also be inspected regularly to prevent major breakdowns at inconvenient times, such as when you seem to be careening at a high speed into another vehicle.

A car s climate control system may actually be working year-round in some areas, so it is important that you have yours inspected regularly, even if you live in a climate where it is not necessary to use the heater or the air conditioner much. While the car s climate control system works to keep you cool, the cooling system keeps the engine itself cool, which is very, very important to the life of your car. Your engine has a lot of moving metal parts that are difficult to keep cool.

However, car engines are technological wonders, using fans and liquids to keep the engine from catching fire, blowing up, or just heaving a big sigh and quitting. The cooling system is best cared for by checking the coolant levels in the reservoirs and checking the wear and tear on hoses. In addition, ask your mechanic regularly to flush your cooling system to replace the dirty coolant with clean fluid.

The final system to keep an eye on is the suspension system, which is the shocks, springs and struts, as well as the steering and tires. One interesting thing about this system is that your tires can act as a monitor for the rest of the suspension system. For instance, heavy wear on one edge of your tires can signal an alignment problem and the need for maintenance.

Thinking about all the hundreds of parts in your car in terms of systems makes keeping a maintenance schedule much easier. Having a regular maintenance schedule can help prevent the necessity of costly repairs.

Best Time To Buy A Car
By Dominic Ferrara

When is the best time to buy a car? How to buy a car manuals charge big money to tell you this, but we’ll do it for free here, and in a lot fewer words!

One school of thought on when the best time is to buy a car says that you should purchase your new or used car at Christmas time. With everybody else looking for Christmas presents, no one’s thinking of buying a new car dealers work harder to make a deal and salesmen are more willing to haggle down to your price.

This same school of thought says that you can also get a good deal from July to October because this is when dealers are trying to get rid of the current year’s inventory to make way for the new models. For a lot of reasons, we’ve come to take model close-out sales with a large grain of salt-they’re usually not nearly as good for the buyer as they sound.

The other school of thought says that the best time to buy a car is when you’re ready to buy one-you want to buy one, you’ve done your research and you’re prepared to do it well. Car dealers and salesmen will do everything in their power to get you to buy a car the day you walk into their showroom-not the car you want to buy either, but the car they’ll make the money off of.

Whether you decide the best time to buy a car is at Christmas, during the end-of-year close-outs or when you want to buy a car, no one who knows anything about the subject would argue that you should first research the car you’re interested in and learn how to get the best deal on it. Any time can be a great time to buy a car, and you can get taken to the car cleaners any time of the year too.

Still not sure?

Here are four simple tips to get the upper hand in your car purchase or lease-whatever time of the year you do it. If you’re looking to buy a car you should begin with these tips.

: some dealers refuse to haggle over the cost of a car, so once you make your opening offer, they won’t accept anything higher. (Go somewhere else.)

: never talk about monthly costs during your negotiations. You’ll pay less if you focus on the cost of the car and all the things that come with it.

: never buy a car when you’re in desperate need for one because a dealer will see that and take advantage. Never wait until your old car is dead before searching for a new one because you should give yourself time to shop around for one and get the best deal possible. Desperation clouds judgment.

: do all your research before any money changes hands.

The best time to buy a car isn’t a date or season on the calendar, but a time on your schedule when you have the time to do what’s necessary to get yourself a great deal. We firmly believe you should start with reading a book on the subject. Great luck!

Mobile Video Systems I Have Known
By John T Jones, Ph.D.

Our webmaster has requested certain articles so this article is his fault. His request was as follows: Mobile-Audio-Video - Articles on automotive video and sound systems belong here, including suggestions and tips as well as system reviews.

In 1977 rather than repair the air conditioning system in my VW bus, I purchased a late 1996 GM conversion van. It had sat on the dealer’s lot for several months and he wanted to unload it. A beautiful critter that would not fit in my garage it had in additional to the mood lighting a VCR player and a television set.

The first thing we noticed when we brought the van home was that our dog, Zipper, just loved it. He jumped right in and would not get out. He knew that something was up with the moving company hauling our furniture out the front door. He was not going to be left behind.

Zipper was a member of No Dog Left Behind. That’s probably where the young Mrs. Bush got her idea for No Child Left Behind, a program that educator s and parents seem to hate. Personally, I have not objection to leaving certain kids behind.

Zipper was one of the reasons we had to have a van. He was a big Labrador retriever. The other reason was that my wife enjoys plants. She started the program No Plant Left Behind.

We filled the van with Zipper and the plants and off we went for Arizona, the “Land of the Sun” and “Allergy Hell.” (We didn’t know about the Juniper problem then.)

Our son, Jimmy, immediately slapped a tape in the VCR player and sat in the back watching Tobruk. To read some of the details of this movie go to: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062377/. Arthur Heller directed the movie and it starred Rock Hudson. Here is the plot: “September 1942 - With Erwin Rommel s Afrika Korps on the march through Egypt, a British special forces unit, composed of German Jews who serve with the British despite the mutual resentment between both, kidnap a Canadian officer who is an expert topographer and who is held prisoner by the Vichy French in Algeria. The officer, Donald Craig, must negotiate a company of British and German-Jewish commandos through 800 miles of the Sahara to aide a pending amphibious landing against Tobruk s massive fuel storage base - a mission that sees one impediment after another, and which discovers an undetected German armored force ready to win the battle of Egypt.”

Sounds exciting, right? Well, Doris Day was missing.

Listening to he sound track I realized that Jimmy had been driving for about five years and had a valid New Jersey driving license. After some persuasion Jimmy was driving and I was back watching Tobruk.

When we got to Arizona, I bought Jimmy a Nissan pickup and my wife a Toyota Corolla. He took off for Utah to go to college. For that reason, since then, I’ve never sat in the back of my van and watched a movie.

Jimmie came back once and traded his pickup for my wife’s Corolla. We still have the pickup and Jimmie still has the Corolla. He didn’t stay long enough so that we could take a trip and I could watch a movie in the back of my van.

I’m not saying that my van’s video system is not used. When we go fishing, my grandkids pile in the back, pull down the sun shades, and turn on the VCR player and the television. I have heard the soundtrack of a dozen movies that I have not seen. My usual comment is, “TURN THAT DOWN!”

When the kids get out of the car, they leave everything on and the sun shades down. I tell them, “IF YOU DON’T LEARN TO LEAVE THE VAN THE WAY YOU FOUND IT, YOU WILL NEVER GO FISHING AGAIN!”

I mean it. I’m tired of them catching all the fish while I operate my “pole and reel repair shop” and bait the hooks for the girls.

So my suggestion for selection of a video system is this: Don’t buy one if you have grandkids. It’s cheaper to give them a coloring book and a box of crayons.

Back in 1998, experts called Daimler and Chrysler’s union a marriage ‘made in heaven.’ But about a decade after, the perfect union has reached a critical juncture. How did the union hit the rocks?

On Sept. 15, DaimlerChrysler AG’s CEO stunned the world by forecasting a $1.5 billion third-quarter loss for the Chrysler Group. The executives know they are all in trouble but nobody has ever imagined how grave the trouble could be.

After a number of profitable quarters, Chrysler had collapsed inwardly. Its erratic sales performance triggered Daimler’s decision to sell it off before it capsizes the whole company. Chrysler would be sold for $7.4 billion to private-equity giant Cerberus Capital Management.

But with the said decision, pressure intensified. It does not only mark the failure of a merger but also includes a bunch of other struggles. Inventories of unsold product lines were suffocating the dealers. Also, negotiations on the new company policies are choking workers. “It shows the problems of the fusions of big companies,” said Willi Diez, the head of the Germany-based Auto Industry Institute. “You have cultural differences. You have the problem of who really runs the company.”

In interviews with a number of individuals close to Daimler to reconstruct pivotal events leading up to the May 14 sale of Chrysler, most spoke on the condition of anonymity.

When Zetsche became Daimler’s CEO, no one thought he would sell Chrysler. Like power antennas, Zetsche was famed for efficiently leading Chrysler’s path to solidify the merger. But Zetsche became ultimately disappointed by the lack of synergies between Chrysler s mass-market vehicles and the luxury product lines built by Mercedes-Benz. As a result, Chrysler inventories became bloated and heavy incentives failed to push vehicles off dealer lots. The warning on Sept. 15 turned concerns about Chrysler into a full-scale predicament.

People close to Zetsche said that he truly believed that Daimler could become an integrated powerhouse if Mercedes and Chrysler shared more engineering costs and high-volume parts. He strived hard for more cooperation, and initiated the development of common platforms for small-car and SUV product lines. Nonetheless, the joint projects only underscored the huge differences between a Mercedes and a Chrysler. While engineers could unite, they could not change the fact that a small Mercedes car sells for double the price of a Chrysler compact.

Many Mercedes auto parts were simply too expensive to be part of a Chrysler vehicle. Still, Zetsche insisted. One German exec recalled challenging the idea that integration could work. “Thank you for your opinion,” Zetsche told him. “I have a different one. We will go on with the cooperation.”

While Daimler struggled to solve its Chrysler problem, the company s shareholders were swiftly losing patience. Influential shareholders pressed Zetsche and Bodo Uebber, DaimlerChrysler s chief financial officer, to sell Chrysler. “Zetsche s pressure comes from so many different constituencies telling him they re sick to death of Chrysler,” said John Lawson, a London-based analyst at Citigroup.

In private, Zetsche was ratcheting up the pressure on LaSorda and his team. No one felt the pressure more than Joe Eberhardt, a former Mercedes exec who was in charge of Chrysler sales and marketing. Eberhardt had alienated many Chrysler dealers with his autocratic style during the terrible summer of 2006. He resigned on Dec. 5.

Early this year, Zetsche appeared reconciled that a sale was the best option. “It took him awhile to get to this decision, that it was right for Daimler and Chrysler to separate,” said a person close to Zetsche. Valentine s Day 2007 was supposed to mark a fresh start for Chrysler simply because the marriage was officially headed for a divorce.

How Much Can I Claim for my Charity Vehicle Donation?
By Daniel Goodman

The American Jobs Creation Act providing tax cuts to business was funded in part by increasing taxes to individuals. Approximately $2.4 billion was realized through restrictions on donors to receive the fair market value for car donations. Deductions are now limited to the gross charity sale price or a maximum fair market value of $500. Since most donated vehicles are sold at dealer auctions, this has resulted in dramatic decreases in vehicle donations, especially of higher value cars.

WHEN CAN YOU CLAIM FULL “FAIR MARKET” VALUE?

There are still a few exceptions that allow donors to claim fair market value for their charity car donation. The IRS regulations for these restrictions are limited and they warn that some car donations taken under these exceptions will not be allowed . According to the IRS, donors may claim a deduction for the full fair market value only if:
o The charity makes a significant intervening use of the vehicle, such as delivering “meals on wheels”.
o The charity makes a material improvement to the vehicle, i.e., major repairs that significantly increase its value.
o The charity gives the donated vehicle or sells it to a needy individual in need of transportation at a cost significantly below market price.

DETERMINING THE FAIR MARKET VALUE:

The IRS accepts the Vehicle Donation Industry recommendation that the proper fair market value of a donated vehicle is the private party sale value. This value is determined by the donor and can be found in guides such as Kelley Blue Book. The actual condition of the vehicle must always be taken into consideration in determining the value.

FILING REQUIREMENTS UNDER THE NEW LAW:

o The charity must provide the donor a written acknowledgment (a tax receipt or Form 1098C) within 30 days of selling or placing the vehicle in use. it should state the amount the vehicle sold for, if over $500, or that it is eligible for the full fair market value deduction due to the intervening use .
o The donor must file the tax receipt or 1098C with their tax return, if claiming more than $500.
o Charities must file a form 1098C with the IRS for all car donations including the donor s Social Security number and VIN.

Note: It is the donor’s responsibility to accurately determine the vehicle ‘fair market’ value and your tax status. Consult your tax advisor to determine your individual tax situation.

Losing control of your car and losing the function of your breaks could actually happen in real life not just in movies and soap operas. In fact, it could happen to your car or to a Geo vehicle, or to any other vehicle. This usually happens if you do not take good care of your car and its brake system. Also, if the owner of the vehicle has not gone through the usual check ups, losing control of the brakes could happen.

What if it happens to you? The first thing to do is to stay calm and keep control of the situation even if the vehicle itself is not responding to your attempts at stopping or slowing it down. There are actually two possibilities that could happen to you and your car. First, your pedal does not go down and feels hard. And second, your pedal would sink to the floor and would feel too soft.

If the first thing happens to you when your brake feels hard and would not go down despite your attempts at pressing it down, it just simply means that your brake booster is not working correctly. This kind of problem is oftentimes caused by a vacuum leak, or the engine itself has stopped running. If this happens, do not distress. You still have the power to push down very hard on the brake pedal. Even if it would not provide the desired effect of eventually slowing or stopping the vehicle, pressing down hard could provide some force and provide some brake.

If you find yourself in the second situation where the brake is just too soft, remember that modern vehicles have been installed with a second braking circuit. Despite the fact that you are pressing the pedal to the floor and nothing seems to be happening, the truth is that you might be providing some braking power which assists in slowing down your vehicle.

If nothing happens despite your efforts at braking, try using the parking brake which is also known as the emergency brake. Usually, it works on the rear wheels only however, it is better than not having any kind of brake at all. And yes, always remember to still think clearly despite the no-brakes situation. Make sure that you still steer clear of any obstacles especially other vehicles and pedestrians.

As vehicle manufacturers keep on producing cars with technology and advancements so as to provide safe cars, Auto Parts Information maintains its lead on product excellence by continuously supplying top grade Geo parts and other vehicle parts like brakes and brake system parts.
